This region, with its breathtaking natural beauty, is a true gem – but it’s also facing a crisis that threatens to undermine its very essence. The affordable housing shortage has become a thorn in the side of Clallam County, creating a divide that cuts deep into the heart of our community.

But fear not, my friends, for we are on the verge of a transformation that will not only address this pressing issue but also unlock Clallam’s true potential. Through a series of strategic initiatives, we’re about to embark on a journey that will empower our residents, strengthen our economy, and cement our status as a beacon of hope in the affordable housing landscape.

Habitat for Humanity: Weaving the Fabric of Clallam’s Future

Let’s start with Habitat for Humanity of Clallam County, the unsung heroes of our community. These tireless champions have been working tirelessly to tackle the affordable housing crisis head-on, and their efforts are about to pay off in a big way.

With the help of a recent $800,000 federal grant, Habitat for Humanity is set to launch their Brownfield Road Project in Sequim – an ambitious endeavor that aims to build up to 53 affordable homes. This isn’t just about putting a roof over people’s heads; it’s about weaving the fabric of a thriving community, where critical workers like emergency responders and essential staff can finally call their own.

“This project embodies a strategic investment in our community, supporting the individuals and families who will call these houses their homes,” says Rep. Derek Kilmer, a longtime Habitat champion. “It’s about building a stronger, more inclusive community where everyone can call home.”

And the community is rallying behind this project with open arms. “The overwhelming community support behind this project is a testament to our shared values and commitment to making sure that all residents have access to safe and affordable housing,” says Brandon Janisse, the Mayor of Sequim.

Makah Tribe: Forging a Sustainable Future

But Habitat for Humanity isn’t the only organization making waves in Clallam. The Makah Tribe, nestled in the remote corners of the reservation, is also stepping up to the plate with a groundbreaking housing initiative of its own.

With the help of an $800,000 federal grant, the Makah Tribe is set to construct a new duplex housing project that will address the chronic shortage of on-reservation housing. This isn’t just about providing a roof over people’s heads – it’s about ensuring the retention and recruitment of essential workers in healthcare, public safety, and education, all while promoting equity and addressing the unique challenges faced by the Makah community.

“This project not only addresses vital community needs but will stand as an example of sustainable development for the Tribe,” says Rep. Kilmer. And the Tribe’s chairman, Timothy Greene, couldn’t agree more: “Our housing shortage directly impacts the Tribe’s ability to hire and retain other essential professional staff, and this project will support the healthcare, public safety, and education in our remote community.”

The Port Angeles Waterfront Center: A Catalyst for Economic Growth

But the affordable housing revolution in Clallam doesn’t stop there. The Port Angeles Waterfront Center, a state-of-the-art meeting and performance space, is also poised to transform the region’s economic landscape.

With the help of $1 million in federal funding, the Field Arts & Events Hall at the Port Angeles Waterfront Center is set to become a hub of activity, generating over $10 million in annual sales and services, creating more than 300 permanent jobs, and contributing over $500,000 in additional state and local taxes.

“This is an investment in the future vibrancy and resilience of our community,” says Rep. Kilmer. And the City of Port Angeles couldn’t be more grateful for the support. “We want to thank Derek for his continued support of Port Angeles and all the work he does for our community,” says Mayor Kate Dexter.

The local Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) programs, supported by the U.S. Department of Labor, are providing a crucial lifeline to job seekers and businesses alike. With over $1.9 million in federal funding for the region, these programs are helping to upskill workers, connect employers with the talent they need, and create a more resilient and prosperous Clallam County.

But the support doesn’t stop there. The Economic Security for All (EcSA) grant, a federal and state-funded initiative, is helping low-income individuals in Clallam, Jefferson, and Kitsap counties move out of poverty and toward a brighter future. With over $900,000 in funding, this program is making a real difference in the lives of our residents, empowering them to achieve their dreams and contribute to the growth of our community.

As I look out over the horizon, I can see the beginnings of a transformation that will change the face of Clallam County forever. From the Habitat for Humanity Brownfield Road Project to the Makah Tribe’s housing initiative and the Port Angeles Waterfront Center, we are laying the foundation for a future of prosperity and inclusivity.
