Growing up, I never imagined that finding a place to call home would be such a challenge. But for too many in Clallam County, the dream of secure, affordable housing remains elusive. As I dove into researching this issue, I was struck by the stark realities facing families and individuals struggling to keep a roof over their heads.
United Way of Clallam County has made housing a top priority, recognizing its critical role in preventing the cycle of poverty. They’ve joined forces with various organizations, forming collaborative efforts like the Clallam County Homelessness Task Force and the Housing Solutions Committee, to tackle this complex problem.
The Realities of the Housing Crisis
The housing crisis in Clallam County doesn’t have a one-size-fits-all solution. As I learned, it’s a multifaceted issue that disproportionately affects certain communities. According to the United Way, those living in poverty or paycheck-to-paycheck include individuals and families who are “Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed” (ALICE) – earning less than the cost of basic necessities but more than the federal poverty line, making them ineligible for public assistance.
Catholic Community Services (CCS) and Catholic Housing Services (CHS) are leading the charge in providing a continuum of care for some of the most vulnerable populations in Clallam County. They operate a network of 22 shelters, 17 transitional housing facilities, and 52 permanent housing properties, serving low-income individuals, families, seniors, and those with special needs.
